Kamifu Avalanche Seminar and Training Report
The Kamifu mountain area (roughly around Furano-dake and Sandan-yama) is a very popular destination for backcountry skiers and snowboarders, with many visitors both local and from abroad visiting each year. However, severe weather and the fact that it is in un-managed nature means there are associated risks. Recently there has been an increase in such risks, and Kamifu-kai has been proactive in preventing further avalanche and other mountain region accidents.
This year’s avalanche seminar and training was part of this activity, with support from ASSH and MASH.
Location: Fukiage-onsen Hakugin-so and surrounding areas
Staff: Kamifu-kai and ASSH
Participants: 30 students
Bear Sighting around Furano-dake
A bear was sighted around the Furano-dake area. It is likely that it failed to hibernate, and may be very aggressive. Extra caution is advised.
